Celebrating Birthday's Today

Roger Bannister
Born: 23rd March, 1929, Harrow, England
Known For : Roger Bannister is best known and remembered for breaking the 4 minute mile on 6th May, 1954 with just 3,000 spectators during a meet between British AAA and Oxford University at Iffley Road Track in Oxford. Like many records before and since to break an important barrier at longer distances help is needed by front runners who can take the pace in earlier laps, these runners should also be mentioned Chris Brasher and Chris Chataway. It should also be noted that the commentator for the race live on BBC Radio was Harold Abrahams, of Chariots of Fire fame.
