Today's Born this day is an interesting duo of two of the most prolific and well known composers in modern times whose backgrounds could not be more different.

Stephen Sondheim

Born: Stephen Joshua Sondheim, March 22nd 1930, New York City


Early Life : He grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and later on a farm in Pennsylvania and in his Biography "Stephen Sondheim: A Life" portrayed his childhood as isolated and emotionally neglected, but he was befriended the late graet playwright Oscar Hammerstein II who helped him develope a love for musical theater. He graduated from the New York Military Academy in 1946.



Known For : As an American composer and lyricist for stage and film, with some of the best known Follies, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, A Little Night Music, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins. He is the winner of an Academy Award, multiple Tony Awards (nine, more than any other composer), multiple Grammy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize. In addition to musical theatre his music includes Five songs for Warren Beatty's film Dick Tracy including "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)", songs for other movies and TV include The Birdcage, Reds. His one popular chart success is "Send in the Clowns" from the 1973 musical A Little Night Music. which has been recorded by artists including Frank Sinatra, Judy Collins, Grace Jones , Elaine Paige, Barbra Streisand and Howard Keel. Andrew Lloyd Webber

Born: 22nd March 1948, Kensington, London, England


Early Life : born in London, the son of Jean Hermione a violinist and pianist, and William Lloyd Webber a composer. Andrew Lloyd Webber was encouraged by parents and other family members from an early age in his musical aspirations and studied at Royal College of Music prior to pursuing his interest in musical theatre.



Known For : Primarily a composer who is also known for his joint work with lyricist Tim Rice. His Music includes , The second name or names are the lyricists associated with the work.

Many of the singles from the musicals have gone on to become top ten sellers around the world including Any Dream Will Do, I Don't Know How to Love Him, Don't Cry for Me Argentina, "The Phantom of the Opera" recorded by various artists.
